A large number of folks own wide-screen TVs but only the more recent sets tend to sport HDMI or component video inputs, hence A/V equipment such as Apple TV can’t used with these sets. Recently I stumbled across a converter that enables devices such as Apple TV to be used with more modest wide-screen TVs so long as they will support a fully wired scart connection..
I’ve been testing one over the past few days with a 32″ Hitachi CRT wide-screen TV and the results are promising . Media I’ve previously encoded at 640×360 and 768 x576 looks as good if not better than regular broadcast TV and DVD. This set-up is unlikely to play any HD content purchased from the iTunes store but should certainly buy you some time for existing content you may have already have to hand.
(If you are a technophile the box is actually converting Apple TV’s component video output to an RGB rather than composite video or S-Video hence the very clean and sharp looking picture.)
